Best way to travel from Venice to Lake Garda?

We are travelling from Venice (Marco Polo airport) to Lake Garda, considering Sirmione, in July. Can anyone tell me how we do this? - is the train best as we won't have a car? We want a hotel looking onto the lake and then a few days later we are travelling to Verona for the opera, so need info on how best to do this also.

Yes it is pretty straight forward to get from Venice to Lake Garda by train. You can get off at Peschiera or Desenzano and use public transport or a taxi from there. There are loads of lakeside hotels in Sirmione, but it is very popular so I would definitely book ahead. You can also use the train to get to Verona as well.
