I am going to Lake Garda for the first time in August with my wife & two teenage daughters. We are staying in a villa at Salo, very close to ferry terminal. We are flying and I like the idea of a relaxing, car free holiday, however has anyone any advice on whether it makes sense to hire a car in order to make the most of it, and how prices compare to ferries etc.? I also hope to go to Verona and or Venice and wonder whether there are coach trips from Salo or whether we will need a car to see them?
Hi John,
Your questions are very valid and it does depend on your location. Salo is a great place to stay and we love it there! If you are right in town, then a car free holiday is quite possible, especially if you plan to use the ferry to get around (best way to travel in my opinion).
If you wish to get to Verona over Venice, you can always get a bus down to Desenzano and get the train from there. Public transport is pretty cheap in Italy.
Hope this helps and have a great time!
